BBC Broadcast Transmits First HD Broadcast from the Broadcast Centre to IBC in Amsterdam

BBC Broadcast Limited, a commercial subsidiary of the BBC, today transmits its first HD broadcast from the Broadcast Centre in London to IBC at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Centre in Amsterdam for the duration of the conference. This transmission can be viewed on screens at TSL’s stand (10.238), Eutelsat’s Stand (1.465) and TANDBERG Television’s stand (1.461) and will include HD content from BBC Worldwide including an episode of children’s programme Blue Peter and an extract of natural history programme Planet Earth. Planet Earth, which delivers in 2006, is a major production with Discovery and NHK, and is the first major factual programme delivered in HD by the BBC.

HD content transmitted by BBC Broadcast will also include BBC Post Production’s first HD drama Every Time You Look at Me, which aired in the UK in April 2004 and two BBC short films, Undone and The Accidental Perfectionist, both of which were conformed, graded and on-line edited in HD by BBC Post Production, using their eQ suite.

The Broadcast Centre, completed in October 2003, is the most advanced playout facility in Europe and is located in London, UK. The transmission from the Broadcast Centre to IBC is made possible by uplinking from BBC Outside Broadcasts, space segment from Eutelsat, HD encoders from TANDBERG Television, HD playout servers from Omneon, automation from Omnibus, HDCam VT from Sony, logo generator and HD codecs from Evertz and multiviewers by Miranda. Systems integration was by Television Systems (TSL).

Chris Howe, BBC Broadcast’s Chief Technology Officer says, “Even though our client's HD strategies are still being formed today, the Broadcast Centre is ready when the consumer demands it tomorrow. Our HD capabilities will enable any broadcaster to transmit from this resilient and state-of-the-art facility on various platforms at a competitive price.”
